It's rough when your birthday is December 26. And often you get gypped out of a cool cake. Even if your mom is "Ni."
This year "Ni" did a nice cake for her daughter earlier in December. Here's what it looked like:
For the actual day of birthday, the December 26th birthday girl requested a crab cake. That is, a cake that looked like a crab. But who wants to bake a cake the day after Christmas? There was half of a cake in the freezer that became this little sand crab creature -- a 10-minute deal and the birthday girl loved it! One thing to keep in mind is that while crushed graham crackers make great sand, it also goes flying when the birthday candles are blown out.
Happy 7th Birthday, CBR!

65th Anniversary Cake (on the road with BeNi Cakes!)
After shipping my supplies via FedEx down to Memphis and finding the other needed supplies at a local grocers, here is the anniversary cake that I made "on the road!"
A few things I learned were that brands of pure cane confectioners sugar and humidity changes and electric ovens make HUGE differences in how frostings and cakes work! But I also discovered a fun, new-to-me thing... It is SO yum and yes, I bought a few cans to take home so now I'm sure to find it in our town when I get back. :)
The cakes were white with Solo Cake and Pastry Raspberry filling and buttercream frosting. The dark red mini carnations and sprigs of mint are real.
By the way, this was a cake for my husband's Grandparents. They will be married 65 years in December and we had a little surprise celebration for them at Thanksgiving while the whole family was gathered since some of us won't be in town for Christmas.

Soccer Cake
Happy 2nd Birthday, Eric!
Carrot cake with buttercream frosting and fondant soccer balls with buttercream details. Making hexagons with frosting is a little tricky....as is finding plastic soccer balls in Quito and wire in my basement!

A Killer Whale of a Cake!
Ok, so I know I'm supposed to call it an orca. This spyhopping orca was made for Andy's 11th birthday and he loved it! We're studying sea creatures in science this year and he requested a sea creature cake. Thanks to http://www.cakecentral.com/ for the inspiration!
The cake was two layers -- a white cake with blue swirls (which turned out quite cool looking) on top of a chocolate cake (we called this part the abyss). Frosted with buttercream frosting and fondant sea creatures. Did you know that sea snakes have paddle-shaped tails? They're also supposed to have stripes. The orca was formed with Rice Krispie treats and covered with buttercream frosting.

2nd Birthday Requires TWO cakes, right?
Pokemon!
I learned about Pokemon a little bit this week. I think he is the little yellow guy. His name is sort of tricky to write, and he likes lightening bolts. Best of all though, he was going to sit on this cake and go to Wyatt's 7th Birthday party!
White cake with vanilla pudding filling. Marshmallow fondant with buttercream icing underneath, and the POKEMON sign was made with a gumpaste/fondant mix to help it keep it's shape.
Happy Birthday Wyatt! Hope you had a good one!

Cub Scout Cake
The Cub Scouts that meet in town here were raising money for their camps by having a cake auction and our neighbor boy up the road is a WEBELOS so what better to make than his patch!
There were some really fun cakes and fun ideas at the auction. My favorites were the pizza cake and the kitty litter box cake (grodie, but kinda funny)!
The parents and families of these boys were amazing and didn't mind spending the money for a good cake and an even better cause. My husband is an Eagle Scout, so he filled me in on all the boy stuff and even suggested this cake design. So thanks, Babe.Confetti cake with buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant. Yum, yum!

Train Cake
I need to get a better backdrop and not be in a hurry to take cake photos! Usually I am finishing last minute touches before heading out the door with them. This one eventually got a colorful striped ribbon laced in the plate, but no photo of it. It also had a cute Thomas the Tank Engine figure put on the track, but again no photo! It was for a 3rd birthday party, triple chocolate fudge cake with buttercream filling and marshmallow fondant decor! The kids loved it (and so did the adults!)

It's (going to be) A BOY shower cake!
Congratulations to my friend J. who is going to be a Grandma! She ordered a baby shower cake for her daughter's shower last weekend. The only requests were that it be fondant covered and maybe have some airplanes on it. Here's what we came up with---
The cake was white cake with blue swirls and a bit of buttercream frosting underneath the marshmallow fondant.
This little boy is going to be welcomed into one great family and I'm happy I was able to make his first celebration cake!

Birthday Cake!
A friend of my husband's ordered a birthday cake for his wife (also my friend) and requested white cake with chocolate frosting. She supposedly thought that he was ordering it from Costco or making it himself, so I wanted to keep it simple, yet stylish and as far from commercial as I could. I found a similar cake on cake central, but not completely with chocolate frosting, so this is my take on that design...
Happy Birthday, Chrissy!

Happy 1st Birthday, Taylor!
In honor of his parents love of SEC football and favorite college, Taylor's birthday cake was fashioned after the tiger mascot of Auburn University.
Chocolate fudge cake with cream cheese frosting and fondant decor awaited the party goers of this little boy's milestone birthday!

"Imagine if..."
It's the theme of the Alaska State Fair this year. Basically, imagine anything you want coming true.
Now think of a Birthday cake idea.
Specifically for a gal who likes to travel.
Put them together and what have you got...bippity, boppity, umm...sorry, too much Cinderella around here lately.
A BLUE RIBBON WINNER!!!
The North Star Bakery in Wasilla sponsored the contest and though there weren't a lot of entrants, it was still a fun time.
I took the cake to my friend's Birthday party afterward and she loved it. In fact, it fed the whole restaurant, guests and workers included! Everybody loves a piece of Birthday cake.

Flying and Fairies
After a summer hiatus from cake decorating I managed to present two very different, though both BeNi-worthy, cakes from the blue kitchen.
Here is the first...
For a FedEx family picnic at the Anchorage Zoo. It was a lovely day and a great day for a picnic and cake!
Secondly, a Princess in town was having her 3rd birthday and was in need of a chocolate cake with vanilla pudding filling to help celebrate.
Needless to say, I'm resting today and trying not to eat too many pieces of scrap cake.

Lilac Birthday Cake
A friend ordered a 50th Birthday cake for her mom and requested lilacs...here's what we created. It's so fun to have my sister in town visiting for a few weeks. It was especially nice to have her help making all these little flower petals.
Chocolate cake with raspberry filling, marshmallow fondant and buttercream fondant, buttercream dots and chocolate branches!

Elmo Loves Cake!
I don't have overly wonderful photos of this cake, but it was really cute! It had some fondant yellow stars with fondant blue and red letters on toothpicks that spelled out the birthday boy's name, and those went into the red dots on the top of the cake. I didn't put them in for the delivery drive though so no good picture. Sorry!
The cake was white cake with a lovely strawberry and real whipped cream filling. Buttercream frosting and fondant accents. The bottom red border is all "2's" since this is a birthday cake for a 2 year old!

Happy Birthday Monique!
Cream cheese frosting is a little tricky. I wish my hands were freezing like Ni's are, then it wouldn't melt in the bag so fast! I was still happy with how it turned out and just put the flowers over the swirls that weren't all that cute.
The cake is layered inside alternately-vanilla, strawberry, vanilla with white cream cheese frosting between. I snacked on the tops of the cake that I cut off and it is YUMMY!
Gotta love the sippy cup on the table!

African Safari
This is for a party we are headed to to celebrate our friends recent trip to Africa!
It is covered in marshmallow fondant and fondant detailing. The sunset is painted on using frosting coloring and rum, which was a first for me and I loved how it turned out! It dries so nice and shiny! We'll see if you can taste the rum at all in just a few hours...I used citrus flavored rum just in case you can. It's an orange flavored cake, so I thought it would be a good compliment.
