A Quick Birthday Cake

I met a new neighbor who came by with another neighbor to order a cake for two days out.  Yikes!  How could I say no, especially when I was in my jammies and looking like he had totally interrupted my Lifetime movie-thon?  (umm...okay, so maybe he had)  BUT it was an order for a birthday cake for his wife and since they are new in town and I love to make birthday cakes and I had the time I took the order!
I forgot to take a picture before I left home so here is an in-the-car-delivery photo!
Dark chocolate cake with caramel drizzle filling and a light whipped buttercream and chocolate frosting ensemble.  YUM!

Atiska Ataska Charlie's on a CAKE!

Happy Birthday to Anne C., author of a wonderful children's book titled "Atiska Ataska Charlie's in Alaska!"  It was a challenge to make an airplane out of fondant and I had a great time making an Alaska themed cake.

Rex a saurus Toy Story Birthday Cake!

Happy 3rd Birthday to Michael!  Here are some pictures of his Toy Story Rex cake that was a delish vanilla cake with whipping cream and fresh strawberries filling.  It had a little buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant too.  Rex was made out of rice krispies and covered in fondant.  He had to be yummy!

And in case you were wondering what Rex is supposed to look like...

Wheel of Fortune Birthday Cake

Happy Birthday to my Gram in Iowa!  This was BeNi's first shipped cake thanks to FedEx priority overnight shipping!  I dropped it off at 1230pm AST yesterday and Gram had it by 10am CST today and said it was in perfect condition.  Yay!  It took a lot of plastic wrap and a lot of packing peanuts, but I'm glad to know they can ship.

Gram was surprised and loved it, of course.  She's a huge Wheel fan.  Happy 79th Gram!

Turtle Cake

A dark chocolate with cream cheese frosting "turtle" cake!  Happy 37th Jen!  (the yummiest part had to be the "cake-pop-like" head and feet made from crumbled cake and chocolate frosting covered in fondant!)

The giant cupcake cake meets the rose cake!

This cake was an experiment and was just in time for SeƱora Jarrin's birthday. (I experimented with marble fondant for her cake last year!) The swirly roses need a different frosting recipe, or maybe I just need to practice more. Either way, I think I'll be using my giant cupcake pan a lot more now!

Short Notice Soccer Cake

Start to finish time: just under six hours with an hour to spare before pick-up time! Now you know why my pentagons and hexagons are just a bit off. Hopefully the birthday boy won't mind (maybe he won't even notice!).

¡Feliz CumpleaƱos Wesley!

Happy Birthday to my gardening friend!

Okay, so there is a little story behind a garden cake for a January birthday! My neighbor and friend has a wonderful spot for a huge garden and the last few years I've been able to help him plant it. It's a big job, and I'm a terrible help when it comes to weeding it, but we do get an awful lot of rewards once the veggies start producing. Since we are the main ones in our families who enjoy the profit of gardening, I figured he might just like a garden cake and our families would finally eat some cabbage and carrots!

This cake is chocolate fudge cake with chocolate pudding "squirts" here and there in it, frosted with chocolate frosting and sprinkled with Oreo crumbs. The veggies are all made out of marshmallow fondant and buttercream icing. The railroad ties are Keebler fudge covered wafer cookies. It was a wonderfully delicious chocolaholic's dream cake!

And just so you know what I was trying to duplicate (but could not find a moose figurine anywhere this week!)...
and by the way...I apologize greatly for the terrible photos. Alaska is very dark in the winter and lighting was awful today. Plus my husband took them and I didn't double check them before cutting the cake. Oops!

Flowers and a 10-minute BeNi cake!

It's rough when your birthday is December 26. And often you get gypped out of a cool cake. Even if your mom is "Ni."

This year "Ni" did a nice cake for her daughter earlier in December. Here's what it looked like:
For the actual day of birthday, the December 26th birthday girl requested a crab cake. That is, a cake that looked like a crab. But who wants to bake a cake the day after Christmas? There was half of a cake in the freezer that became this little sand crab creature -- a 10-minute deal and the birthday girl loved it! One thing to keep in mind is that while crushed graham crackers make great sand, it also goes flying when the birthday candles are blown out.
Happy 7th Birthday, CBR!

Soccer Cake

Happy 2nd Birthday, Eric!
Carrot cake with buttercream frosting and fondant soccer balls with buttercream details. Making hexagons with frosting is a little tricky....as is finding plastic soccer balls in Quito and wire in my basement!

A Killer Whale of a Cake!

Ok, so I know I'm supposed to call it an orca. This spyhopping orca was made for Andy's 11th birthday and he loved it! We're studying sea creatures in science this year and he requested a sea creature cake. Thanks to http://www.cakecentral.com/ for the inspiration!
The cake was two layers -- a white cake with blue swirls (which turned out quite cool looking) on top of a chocolate cake (we called this part the abyss). Frosted with buttercream frosting and fondant sea creatures. Did you know that sea snakes have paddle-shaped tails? They're also supposed to have stripes. The orca was formed with Rice Krispie treats and covered with buttercream frosting.

Hawaiian Birthday Cake

This yummy cherry chip with cherry buttercream and marshmallow fondant cake was for a birthday gal who is going to celebrate again in Hawaii in a few weeks! We got our first big snowfall the day it was completed, so hopefully it warmed the party a bit!
The trees were gumpaste molded around dowels.

2nd Birthday Requires TWO cakes, right?

Well, when your mom is cake crazy and can't decide between a candy cake and Mary Poppins cake...this is what you get!
You also get cake pops and other yumminess...

Pokemon!

I learned about Pokemon a little bit this week. I think he is the little yellow guy. His name is sort of tricky to write, and he likes lightening bolts. Best of all though, he was going to sit on this cake and go to Wyatt's 7th Birthday party!

White cake with vanilla pudding filling. Marshmallow fondant with buttercream icing underneath, and the POKEMON sign was made with a gumpaste/fondant mix to help it keep it's shape.
Happy Birthday Wyatt! Hope you had a good one!

Train Cake

I need to get a better backdrop and not be in a hurry to take cake photos! Usually I am finishing last minute touches before heading out the door with them. This one eventually got a colorful striped ribbon laced in the plate, but no photo of it. It also had a cute Thomas the Tank Engine figure put on the track, but again no photo! It was for a 3rd birthday party, triple chocolate fudge cake with buttercream filling and marshmallow fondant decor! The kids loved it (and so did the adults!)
